The Journey of Carter’s Table
From Farmers Markets to Downtown Flavor
Carter’s Table isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a story of passion, perseverance, and bold culinary creativity. Founded by Shawn Carter, a Penn State alumnus, Carter’s Table began with a simple dream: to bring people together through the universal love of food. What started as a catering business quickly evolved into a community favorite, known for its “Worldwide Flavors” and inventive menu that reflects Shawn’s Lebanese, Italian, and African-American heritage.
Humble Beginnings
Shawn’s culinary journey began as a dishwasher at a country club, where he fell in love with the art of cooking. After years of exploring different careers, including real estate and car detailing, he realized his true calling lay in the kitchen. Inspired by his family’s rich cultural background and his passion for serving others, Shawn launched Carter’s Table as a catering business in 2018. His unique approach to combining global flavors and authentic ingredients quickly gained attention, laying the foundation for what was to come.

The Farmers Market Phenomenon
In the spring of 2022, Carter’s Table made its debut at the Downtown State College Farmers Market, offering bold and creative tacos that stood out from the crowd. Shawn’s “Worldwide Flavors” concept brought everything from Asian-inspired beef to Lebanese-spiced lamb to the table. Students, locals, and market-goers couldn’t get enough, and word spread like wildfire. Lines formed, demand grew, and the little food stand became a sensation.
A Dream Realized
By January 2023, Carter’s Table had found its permanent home in downtown State College at 407 E. Beaver Ave. The restaurant serves a carefully curated menu of tacos, quesadillas, and specials that push the boundaries of traditional flavors. Whether it’s chili-lime chicken or brisket tinga, every dish reflects Shawn’s dedication to crafting food that’s both innovative and comforting.
A Community Staple
Carter’s Table isn’t just about the food—it’s about community. From hosting booths at events like Wing Fest to being a must-visit spot for Penn State football weekends, Carter’s Table has become a beloved part of State College culture. The restaurant even features a stunning mural celebrating its roots, designed by a local artist and inspired by Shawn’s journey from the farmers market to a thriving downtown hotspot.
At Carter’s Table, every dish tells a story. It’s a story of heritage, creativity, and a passion for bringing people together through unforgettable flavors. Whether you’re a longtime fan or visiting for the first time, we invite you to be a part of our journey. Because at Carter’s Table, it’s more than just food—it’s an experience.
